Skis and boots as one set: the key equipment decision

Why skis and boots should be chosen together if the equipment is meant to help with control.

Skis and boots as one set: the key equipment decision

I do not treat skis and boots as two separate purchases. They are one system that transfers movement from the body to the ski in a way the skier can control.

Start with the boot

The ski boot is one of the most important parts of the set. A badly fitted boot takes away the joy of skiing and makes control harder, even when the ski itself is a good choice.

First I look at the boot type for the skiing style, then flex, length and width. Custom footbeds or shell work come later.

Flex is not a universal number

Flex describes how much force is needed to bend the boot. It should not be compared one-to-one across all brands, because it depends on construction and purpose.

Checklist

  • the boot holds the foot firmly without pain
  • flex fits the level, weight and type of skiing
  • skis and boots require a similar level of skill
  • the set supports the turn you ski most often
