First steps on skis: from chaos to a safe lesson
How to prepare the first stage of learning so the student knows the goal, place and next safe step.
The first lesson should prepare the student to use the slope safely and independently. It should not prove that progress happened fast. That is why I first organise the goal, conditions, level and communication.
First, I understand the student
I do not start with an exercise. First I check age, experience, attitude, fear of speed, previous injuries and the goal for the day.
A child needs shorter instructions, a safe place and playful tasks connected to a clear goal.
Set a small, reachable goal
At the beginning, I do not promise big results. A goal that is too ambitious can discourage the student. A small goal that is achieved builds motivation for the next step.
Instructor advice
Do not start the first day on a slope that is meant to impress. Start where you can stop calmly, turn and understand the next task.
